Bresson composed his shots to have a balance much as a Director would direct a scene and how a scene would be set decorated. Besides the obvious placement of the woman at the third.. ( not mandatory but often works) Bresson always used a BG in sharp focus. The BG is so interesting here, really helps the shot. I understand now why on the Magnum site they warn.. You can not crop any of these photos (HCB's). This shot; if I saw Bresson's signature on it ,... I would not be skeptical.. It could pass.. I suppose a literary critique would go on and on about negative space, diagonal lines drawing the viewer this way and that.. I never understand all that... I call this a "passing" move. The subject in the foreground is passing out of frame.. I love the way he is unaware of the camera. This street scene you chose as a venue is very appropriate. The Umbrella is a +.. The Vintage look of the gent, his white hair ++ but the best is the heavy overcoat+++ Street Photos just don't look right in Summer Fashions. I like a shot that does not seem today. Timeless.. I blogged it because I feel it has lessons to show about composition. HCB (Henri Cartier-Bresson) took a lot of portraits of friends. He always (one exception) used DOF to show an interesting BG (Background) that was intergral to the overall compostion. In this shot which is a posed family snapshot.. the setting and BG are part of the overall appeal. Another feature I like is.. These people are <span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;"> OCCUPIED</span>... They are too busy stacking rocks to look posed. HCB often used props or engaged his subject in a task that made the shot more candid.
